Building Independence at Home: 6 everyday ideas

At Raya Healthcare, we often hear participants say they want to “do more for themselves.” Independence looks different for everyone. For one person it might mean making their own breakfast; for another, catching public transport to see friends. Whatever it looks like for you, small everyday steps can make a big difference over time.

Here are six ideas to get started.

1. Start with one small task

Choose one everyday task you’d like to take on, such as making a cup of tea, folding washing or putting groceries away. Practise it regularly with your support worker until it feels comfortable, then add another. Small wins build confidence.

2. Use visual routines

A simple picture or checklist on the fridge can make morning and evening routines easier to follow. Ticking off each step helps you stay on track and shows how much you’ve achieved.

3. Get involved in meal planning

Cooking is a great way to build skills. Start by choosing meals for the week and writing a shopping list together. Over time, you might help with chopping, measuring or cooking a whole meal with support.

4. Make technology work for you

Phone reminders, calendar apps and smart speakers can help with remembering appointments, taking medication on time or keeping in touch with family and friends. Your support worker can help you set these up.

5. Practise money skills

Paying at the shops, checking your change or keeping track of spending are all valuable skills. Start small, like paying for a coffee, and build from there.

6. Get out into your community

Independence doesn’t stop at the front door. Joining a local group, visiting the library or trying a new class are great ways to build confidence, make connections and try new things.

Every step counts

Building independence is a journey, not a race. The most important thing is that you set the pace and focus on the goals that matter to you.
